What is Xodus Nexus?

Xodus Nexus is a desktop launcher with an Xbox-style interface for Linux. You sign in with your Microsoft account, see your owned and Game Pass games in one library, install them from the Store and press Play. It runs games through a shared Windows compatibility runtime, so there is no Windows installation involved.

The launcher was created in October 2026 and is developed in the open on GitHub under the MIT licence. It is built on Xodus, an older open-source project whose stated aim is to bring Xbox PC games to Linux and possibly Mac. Xodus Nexus ships its own patched build of Xodus as its "backend" and is not an official release from the Xodus developers.

How Xodus Nexus works

Xodus Nexus is made of three parts. You download only the first; the launcher installs the other two from its Settings page.

PartWhat it does
LauncherStore browsing, your library, the install queue and launch controls.
Nexus backendA patched build of Xodus that handles Microsoft account sign-in, license checks, package downloads and launch preparation.
Nexus runtimeThe Windows compatibility layer, built on Xodus Proton and Xodus XGameRuntime with extra compatibility patches. Every game uses the same shared runtime.

What you can do with it

  • One library. My Library combines owned, Game Pass and installed games, with filters for access and play state.
  • Browse and install. The Store tab lists supported PC games. The Install Queue downloads one game at a time, with pause and resume.
  • Add to Steam. Games, or the launcher itself, can be added to Steam as Non-Steam shortcuts with artwork, including in Game Mode. Native Linux Steam is required; Flatpak Steam is not yet supported.
  • Xbox features. Xbox sign-in and cloud saves are available for supported games. Since 0.3.8, game pages show Xbox achievements, time played and last activity where available.
  • Controllers. Experimental gamepad navigation, plus an optional per-game DualSense compatibility mode.

What you need

A 64-bit x86 Linux system, a Microsoft account with a valid game purchase or a subscription such as PC Game Pass, and an enabled, unlocked system keyring (KDE Wallet or GNOME Keyring) to store your sign-in. If Microsoft sign-in waits on a passkey, the "Continue in browser" option needs Google Chrome. The install guide goes through each requirement.

Things to know before you start

  • It is unofficial. Microsoft and Xbox do not support it. Features can stop working if Microsoft changes its services.
  • Compatibility varies by game. Check the compatible games list before downloading a large title.
  • Steam Deck support is experimental and not yet tested on real hardware by the developer.
  • Report problems in the right place. Issues with Xodus Nexus go to its own GitHub issue tracker, not to the upstream Xodus project.

Xodus Nexus questions

What is Xodus Nexus?

Xodus Nexus is a free, open-source Linux launcher for Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass games. It lets you browse the Store, install games you own or can access through a subscription, and play them on Linux with a shared Proton-based runtime.

Is Xodus Nexus official?

No. It is an independent project by a single developer, built on the separate Xodus project. Neither is made, endorsed or supported by Microsoft or Xbox, and the Xodus Nexus developer states that it is not an official release from the upstream Xodus developers either.

Is Xodus Nexus free?

Yes. The launcher is released under the MIT licence and costs nothing. You still need a valid game purchase or a subscription such as PC Game Pass for the games you install.

Does Xodus Nexus work on Steam Deck?

Experimentally. The developer says Steam Deck and similar handheld support is experimental and is currently tested on virtualized SteamOS, not on real handheld hardware. Use launcher 0.3.2 or newer with backend 0.2.3 or newer on SteamOS.

Which games work with Xodus Nexus?

The community compatibility list has 65 entries: 47 playable, 4 partly playable and 12 not working, with the rest unverified. See the compatible games page.

Is it safe to use with my Xbox account?

You sign in with your own Microsoft account, and your credentials are stored in your system keyring. Microsoft does not support or endorse third-party launchers, so using one with your account is your own decision and at your own risk.

Does Xodus Nexus work on Windows or macOS?

No. Releases are x86_64 Linux AppImages only.
